Hudson Canyon Nominated as a National Marine Sanctuary
November 18, 2016
Located just 100 miles southeast of the Statue of Liberty, the Hudson Canyon is home to a rich diversity of marine life including endangered whales, sharks, sea turtles, and more.
Although many aquatic species rely on this submarine canyon, the largest on the East Coast, this fragile area and the animals who live there could be threatened by oil and gas exploration and extraction. That's why WCS's New York Aquarium has nominated the Hudson Canyon as a National Marine Sanctuary.
Sanctuary status will not only protect wildlife from oil and gas exploration, but also help sustain commercial and recreational fisheries, as well as pelagic whale and bird cruises that depend on this area.
